Due to the $150 Annual Fee on the Amex Green Card

Since I haven't used this card much recently, it has become a net loss for me. I decided to keep my relationship with Amex through my Blue Card, so I contacted Amex customer service today to try to cancel the Green Card.

Amex customer service initially tried to retain me as a customer, but I was determined not to pay $150 annually for a card I seldom use. The representative offered me another option to downgrade to the American Express Traditional Green Card.

Traditional Green Card

年费$55, with an additional $40 fee if you opt into the Membership Rewards Program.

Compared to the current Amex Green Card on the official website, the Traditional Green Card does not earn points on basic spending. However, if you join the Membership Rewards Program, you can earn 1 point per dollar spent, and 2 points per dollar spent on Amex Travel bookings.

In the end, I chose not to join the Membership Rewards Program, effectively paying $55 annually to maintain a good relationship with Amex.

This downgrade does require a card replacement, which I expect to receive in about a week. Coincidentally, I recently applied for the Fidelity Cash Card, so I'll receive both cards around the same time.

I am quite kind-hearted.

Actually, I could have just canceled the card without much issue since the $55 annual fee offers no benefits.

However, thinking about how Amex was the company that opened the door to credit cards for me in the US years ago, I decided to compromise.
